Olivia thought it was a little ridiculous to get excited over Ian’s contact information on her phone when it rang. He was, after all, her next-door neighbor. He was probably calling to see if Seltzer had caught Lucy again, or to borrow a cup of sugar.

Olivia wished that he would borrow her cup of sugar.

But even though she thought it was pretty obvious that they were really into each other, it never seemed to be the right time. Either she was at the day care being run ragged by tiny shifters with sticky hands or she was at home trying to recover from their tender abuse, or he was chasing Lucy, or Lucy was hollering for help from the bathroom. They had brief conversations at the driveway when they happened to be out at the same time, and they waved shyly through their windows that looked into each other’s houses, but every time, without fail, that Olivia thought he was going to ask her out again, they were interrupted or he shut down on her.

So, she was surprised when he opened the conversation with a bold, “I know it’s really short warning, but do you want to go out of town with me for dinner?”

Olivia’s heart gave a happy little flip-flop. “Tonight? Out of town?”

“Wanda’s got Lucy for the weekend and I thought I could take you out,” Ian said in a rush. “One of those…surprise dates that I don’t tell you where we’re going and we go on a magnificent scenic tour and I sweep you off your feet.”

“You’re not going to tell me where you’re taking me?” Olivia said. He was so nervous that it was adorable, and she didn’t feel an awful lot more calm. It had been a long time since she’d had a crush like this and she worried that she was letting her heart run away with her head.

“No, it’s a secret,” Ian said. “But…oh wait, you might need some things. Girl things or whatever. Okay, fine, I’m taking you to Belle Lake Lodge. I know the owner. And they have really good food. And if you wanted to stay overnight, I’ve reserved a room. For two nights. But I wasn’t going to tell you that part unless the dinner went really well. Oh my god, I’m so bad at this.”

Olivia had walked into the kitchen, which was the window that looked over into his house and caught sight of him in his own kitchen, the phone at his ear, so she could witness his facepalm. They waved at each other and Olivia had to laugh. “I think that sounds great,” she said, wondering if her blush would show through two sets of windows. Probably not. She could barely make Ian’s smile out through the glare. “I mean, not the room, necessarily. We could…ah…play that by ear?”

“That would be fine. Absolutely fine. Great. Amazing.” Ian flashed her a thumbs up and a grin so wide that his eyes all but disappeared.

“I have to set up my classroom this afternoon,” Olivia said slowly, twisting a lock of her hair.
